Bridging Borders, Empowering Business: Harnessing the Power of the L-1 Visa.

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

  • Specialized Knowledge (L-1B) and Managerial/Executive Roles (L-1A): The L-1 visa is available to employees who possess specialized knowledge (L-1B) or who hold managerial or executive positions within the company (L-1A). This allows companies to transfer employees with specialized skills, expertise, and leadership qualities to their U.S. operations, ensuring continuity, efficiency, and effective management.

  • Durations and Extensions: L-1 visa holders can initially stay in the United States for up to three years if they are being transferred to an already established U.S. office that has been in operation for at least 1 year. For employees being transferred to a newly established U.S. office, the initial period can be up to one year. L-1 visa holders can request extensions (in 2 year increments), with a maximum stay of five years for specialized knowledge employees (L-1B) and seven years for managerial or executive employees (L-1A).

  • Spouse and Dependent Benefits: Spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21 of L-1 visa holders are eligible for L-2 dependent visas. L-2 visa holders can study in the United States, and spouses may work, allowing them to seek employment with any employer. This provides flexibility and additional opportunities for family members accompanying the L-1 visa holder.

  • Eligible fore Green Card Processing: In certain circumstances, L-1 visa holders may be eligible to seek U.S. lawful permanent residency in the United States through petitions filed by their employer under the EB1C employment-based immigration category (the green card version of the L-1A visa). This can streamline the transition from nonimmigrant status to permanent residency for qualified individuals.
